In my last post I mentioned that Lana and I are setting up in the clubhouse at a local neighborhood here on Isle of Hope to sell some of our MODCottage container plants–along with some super sweet friends who sell Stella & Dot jewelry and Orient Expressed kids’ clothing (if you are looking for some great stylists let me know, we’ve got the hook up!) One of the fun things about setting up our containers when our friend Rebecca is selling the jewelry is that we all get to try on the pretty pieces and talk about what we wish we could buy if we had unlimited funds. Well, tonight they all kept trying to put me in colorful necklaces like these….

Obviously, the colorful necklaces are gorgeous and will be so much fun in spring and summer, but I just don’t feel right in so much color. I kept saying, “Eh, it doesn’t feel like me…” and Lana would say, “Um, yea….it’s because it has color in it.” I’m so boring! I own these two beautiful S&D pieces…

…and the gold is color-enough for me! Am I too predictable?? I love small, simple, understated jewelry (unless, of course, I’m headed to a wedding or a fun girls’ night out where I can pull off the fun stuff). I’m practical. I have kids. I do dishes and laundry and carpool, I don’t do big jewelry and bright colors. It’s just not me.
We also spoke a lot about “house stuff” while we were there. Our girlfriend, Meredith–who’s selling the kids’ clothing–just recently bought her house and is having fun decorating for the new space. She pulled up a few pictures tonight of her home and I was so jealous–she has the most amazing coral and navy Ikat chairs in her living room! I wish I could find a source for it…it’s so great. I so admire other people’s ability to use color–real, saturated color–in their homes, especially on upholstery. I am so quick to do it for clients and so quick to suggest it for friends, but when it comes to my own home I am terrified to pull the trigger.
As a decorator, I see so many fabric & wallpaper samples on a daily basis and I am constantly coming up with different color combinations and fabric schemes for other people’s homes. I love every single bit of what I see and love love love it even more when I see it all come together in a finished room, but to put color in my own house seems like such a commitment. I looked for wallpaper for my foyer for months (literally, at least 6 months. Lana got sick of hearing about it). What did I finally choose? GRASSCLOTH! What color grasscloth, you ask? KHAKI! BLAH! Don’t get me wrong, I love my grasscloth foyer….but the second it started to go up on my walls I looked at the person hanging it and yelled said “I’M SO BORING!!!”
So tonight I get home from the container show, sit down to the computer for a minute to check up on emails and pay a few bills (blah) and of course I ended up blogrolling…shocking. I found a blog I’ve never visited before, Lime in the Cocount (cute name!) and her most recent post is about a house quiz she took. Well you know I had to take it, too, right? Yeah….here’s what I got…..
You’re solid as a Ranch house!
Guess what….I LIVE IN A 1976 RANCH!!! I am so predictable even a computer quiz has me pegged! But do you know what? I’ve decided that’s just fine with me. I believe strongly in owning who you are, even when it comes to something as frivolous as your decorating style. I am comfortable with light, airy neutral colors, natural materials, lots of comfy pillows, natural light through the windows, baskets galore and gallery walls everywhere. I am a ranch house, and I’m owning it. (Side note: if I ever win the lottery and get to build my dream house I’m going with cedar shingles and stark white trim all the way…east coast chic. But until then, ranch house dependable it is).
What house style are you? Find out here and let me know!
